Book Offers Winter Fun
It had been 16 years since Roger Fulton had strapped on a pair of cross
country skis in the North Country. But during the winter of 2007-2008
he braved the elements and decided to write a cross country skiing book
for the Lake George Region.
“I was a little bit rusty,” he confided. After a moment he continued,
“Well, actually I was a LOT rusty.”
Undaunted, and with only his ego slightly injured, he covered trail
after trail, often with co-author Mike Carpenter of Queensbury.
Along the way they observed many people on the same trails, but off to
the side snowshoeing.
It had been more than 30 years since he had been on snowshoes, and he
only remembered those big, heavy and “clunky” wooden snowshoes of old.
“Once I tried on a set of modern aluminum snowshoes, I quickly found
out that modern snowshoes are much easier to get around in than the old
wooden ones.” He then smiled and quickly added that, “You don’t go as
fast as on skis, but you don’t fall as often either.”
So, the book was expanded to include both cross country and snowshoeing
areas and trails. The result was a handy, pocket sized book titled, 25
Cross Country Ski and Snowshoe Trails in the Lake George, NY Region.
The book follows the same format as their popular regional hiking,
biking and kayaking books. Their entire series of “outdoor books for
ordinary people” is published by Common Man Books of Glens Falls, NY, a
subsidiary of Glens Falls Printing.
“Whether you want a flat and short beginner’s trail in Queensbury, or a
weekend getaway at a cross country skiing lodge in the Eastern
Adirondacks, we’ve included them in this book. We have even included a
secret place where you can borrow sets of snowshoes for your entire
family to try out, for an entire day, absolutely free,” he told us. But
when pressed for that location, he just smiled and said, “You’ll have
to get the book to find out that information.”
Area bookstores and gift shops will be carrying the books along with
their other outdoor titles in the series. Or you can go online at
www.RogerFulton.com or www.CommonManBooks.com for more details or
ordering information.
Roger Fulton’s parting advice was, “We live in a beautiful area, and
it’s even prettier when the fresh fallen snow is glistening in the
sunlight. It’s quiet, serene and your life goes on hold for a couple of
hours. Get out there and enjoy it!”
